Quick verdict
- Best for
- Solo freelancers and very small businesses with straightforward invoicing and bookkeeping needs that can work without automatic bank feeds.
- Not ideal for
- Businesses that depend on predictable access to processed payment funds or quick, responsive support when an account issue arises.
- Starting price
- Free Starter plan; US Pro is $19/month or $190/year per business
- Key strength
- Starter provides unlimited invoicing and basic bookkeeping at no subscription cost, making it a practical fit for simple, low-volume workflows.
- Key weakness
- Some recent Trustpilot reviewers report payment holds, cancellation difficulty, payroll filing problems, and slow support.
Wave has long appealed to freelancers and small businesses looking for invoicing and bookkeeping without a monthly accounting subscription. Its free Starter plan remains useful for straightforward work, but features such as automatic bank imports and receipt capture sit in Pro, payment processing carries transaction fees, and payroll is a separate service.
What Starter includes
Wave’s Starter plan covers unlimited invoices, estimates, bills, and bookkeeping records, along with a dashboard and mobile app. Businesses can also accept online payments if approved, with processing fees applying to each transaction. For a solo operator who is comfortable entering or importing transactions manually, the free plan can cover basic bookkeeping needs without a trial period.
Pro adds automatic bank transaction imports, transaction merging and categorization, receipt capture, late-payment reminders, and standard user roles. The subscription is charged per business rather than per user. The current pricing table lists Wave’s US and Canadian prices and separates payroll, which is an add-on.
There is a legacy-account wrinkle. Wave’s current pricing materials place bank imports and standard collaborators in Pro, while its legacy-plan help information describes exceptions for businesses that already used those features before May 2024. Some independent sources report a further change to older accounts in 2026. Existing users should check the plan and features shown in their own Wave account.
Payments and payroll change the total cost
Online payment processing is available with Starter, but the per-transaction charge matters for businesses that collect many card payments. Pro reduces the fee on the first ten card transactions in a monthly period; later card transactions return to the standard rate. Bank payments have their own fee and minimum. Approval to accept payments is subject to Wave’s eligibility checks.
Wave Payroll is separate from the accounting subscription. In the United States, its current full-service plan has a monthly base charge plus per-employee and per-paid-contractor fees. Wave says its tax service is available in all 50 states, though some tax situations are excluded and the available service differs by region. Businesses relying on payroll should confirm the current terms and required filings for their specific setup.
What users report
Review-platform feedback is uneven. G2 and Capterra feedback is generally more positive about Wave’s simple interface and free core accounting. Trustpilot presents a more critical picture, with recent reviewers describing held or delayed payment funds, difficulty cancelling, and slow support, particularly on the free plan.
Some reviewers also describe payroll tax-filing problems during the provider transition in 2025. Those reports are relevant if payroll accuracy is central to the business, but they do not provide a current error rate or prove a continuing system-wide problem. Wave’s own payroll materials describe the newer nationwide tax-service arrangement and its limits.
Who Wave suits
Wave is a reasonable place to start for a solo freelancer or very small business with simple invoicing and bookkeeping, modest payment volume, and no immediate need for automated bank feeds. The main attraction is practical: the free plan can handle routine records without a subscription, and the business can add Pro features when manual work becomes inconvenient.
It is a weaker fit for businesses that require deep accounting customization, broad app integrations, or fast support when payment access is at stake. Before relying on Wave for business-critical payment flows or payroll, check the current fees, the account-specific plan limits, and whether its support and compliance coverage fit the way the business operates.
Pricing
| Tier | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $0 | Unlimited invoices, estimates, bills, and bookkeeping records; dashboard and mobile app. Online payments have transaction fees. |
| Pro | $19 USD/month | $190 USD/year when billed annually; $25 CAD/month or $250 CAD/year. Price is per business. Adds bank-feed automation, transaction categorization, unlimited receipt capture, late-payment reminders, and user roles. |
| Payroll add-on (US) | $40 USD/month base | Plus $6 per active employee/month and $6 per paid contractor. US tax service is available in all 50 states; payroll is separate from accounting and has a 30-day trial after first payroll. |
Starter supports unlimited invoices, estimates, bills, and bookkeeping records. Pro is priced per business rather than per user and adds bank imports, receipt capture, and standard user roles. Account-specific exceptions may apply to older grandfathered businesses. Wave's accounting Pro plan has no free trial. Starter card processing is 2.9% + $0.60 for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover; American Express is 3.4% + $0.60. Pro discounts the first 10 monthly card transactions to no fixed fee, then standard card rates apply. ACH is 1% with a $1 minimum. Payroll is a separate paid add-on; eligibility and supported features vary by region.
